Hot
August Night Rod Run & Classic Car Cruise
On the evening
of August 2, 2008, we held our Hot August Night Rod Run.
This was our first attempt at a rod run/cruise event held in the
evening. We figured with the hotter temperatures during
this time of the year that it would be better to have the event
in the evening. We met in Weslaco at the Texas State Bank
parking lot where participants were greeted with goodie bags
filled with all sorts of items including a special dash plaque
for the event and a coupon for our newest design RGV OldCars
t-shirts. In total we had about 85 cars join us at the
bank and after a brief drivers meeting, we hit the road for
about a 55 mile run through some back roads of the valley before
ending up at the Colonial Village Shopping Center in McAllen
where we met up with many many more car folks as the parking lot
filled to overflowing. Doug at the Eskimo Snow snow cone
stand gave us all a free snow cone and Luca Pizza and
Schlotzsky's offered discounts on meals for all the
participants. Harbor Freight Tools gave us over a number
of prizes to give away and many of the lucky drivers went home
with some sort of prize. All in all everyone seemed to
have a great time and made it through the run with no major
problems. Congratulations go out to Jim and Jann Schroeder
for winning the trifecta of cruise hardships as for 3 times in a
row they have had some sort of mechanical breakdown, but
thankfully nothing too major and they pressed on and made it to
the end. A few others had some mechanical issues on some
of the old cars that hadn't seen the road in sometime and kept
our support vehicle driver busy, but it is still great to get
those old cars out and running and get some of these bugs worked
out of them. Thank you also to the South Texas Mustang
club who showed up in great numbers for this event and helped
make it a great success. We look forward to the next event
and will keep you all posted on the schedule for it.
