Though there was not a large
number that turned out for
Sonic's 50th Birthday Party, we
still had a fun time out with
the cars and friends.
50th Anniversary of Sonic --
Weslaco
The attendance for this outing was bleak, but the fun and games
were plenty. This year, 2003, Sonic restaurants are
nationally celebrating their 50th anniversary of being in
business. Local owner/ manager of Sonic Drive-In of
Weslaco, Adan, invited the community and old car lovers to
bring out their classic rides and take part in the celebration
on Saturday, May 17, 2003.
I truly have to commend Adan and his
staff for the hard work and great effort they went to for this
celebration. As I pulled up, I was disappointed to see
that there were so few cars there. I had expected more
people would have turned out. In total I believe we had 8
to 10 old cars there. All Chevrolet by the way, with the
exception of a 1953 Ford and a T-bucket that
rolled in late.
As we arrived, we were greeted with
the car hops out and about all dressed in 50's costumes, poodle
skirts and all. We had 50's music playing and I was
promptly greeted by Adan with a bright smile and warm hand shake
and an immediate thanks for coming to the party. He
quickly handed me a commemorative Sonic keychain and a couple of
coupons for free meals and let me know that they were there to
take care of us and whatever we wanted from the menu to just let
them know and they would give it to us.
After chatting with some of the
other old car guys and gals and snapping a few photos of the
cars, Adan called us all over to the seating area by the play
yard and volley ball court for some fun and games. He had
several prizes he offered out to us all and had trivia questions
and games for us as well. We got a chance to learn some
history on the Sonic Drive-Ins and various stores they now have.
They also had a special cake made
for the occasion for us all, which even had a '57 Chevrolet toy
on it for decoration and a pinata for the kids. Again I
really want to stress how impressed I and others were that
attended in the great effort that Adan and his crew set forth
for us. We all had a good time, just wished that more of
you could have joined us. Thanks again Adan.
