Mission Market Square Classic Car Show -- Mission, TX
March 5, 2005
Months of preparation and planning
went into getting ready for the 2005 Annual Mission Market
Square Classic Car Show. Last year was the first year for
this event and very little time was given to plan and prepare
for it then, but a lot was learned and a lot of the bugs were
worked out. Everything was a go and there were commitments
from about 250 who pre-registered this year that they would be
there for the event with their classic car. The only
problem : THE WEATHER . It was never a definite
answer from local weather forecasters, but simply a chance of
possible showers that might threaten to come down on the day of
the event. The last words were that it should be clear and
so the decision was made to go ahead and host the event as
planned. The Saturday started out pretty nice but as cars
began to fill in the parking area for the event, sure enough,
the sky started sprinkling. A few drops, but not so bad,
but the sky stayed overcast and dreary, but it wasn't going to
stop the old car lovers from gathering together and enjoying
themselves and the other cars. The day actually turned
very nice and the overcast sky helped to keep the temperature
cool and nice. The event was once again FREE to enter for
both car owners registering their cars and for spectators to
stop by and look at them. There was over $2,000 in prize
money given to car owners for winning various classes as well as
trophies and other prizes. Food and drink vendors as well
as others selling different kinds of goods were on hand for
those who wished to do a little shopping. Oldies music
played throughout the day to add to the retro ambience.
RGV OldCars hosted a coloring contest for the kids. ( A
special thank you to Linda Olsen, Cindy Olsen, and Linda Soto
for holding down the fort at the contest. )
Congratulations to Delbert Killinger Jr. for being the winner in
age group 10-12 and to all the other winners and participants in
the coloring contest. The event was attended by well over
200 old cars despite the rain showers and threat of more
sprinkles throughout the day. The event really was a great
success and everyone we talked with loved the event and is
looking forward to next year. We are looking forward to
clearer weather. =) The event was cut a little short
and the awards presentations had to get hurried up a little as
the showers finally did come a little before the planned end of
the show and started raining a little harder. All in all
it was a great day of old cars and fellowship and we hope to see
you all there next year. In case you missed the event of
if you would like a nice keepsake of the event, we do have
available a DVD video of the event as well as a digital photo
CD. The DVD and CD contain images of nearly all of the
cars that were present at the event. There may have been a
few that slipped in later and missed being on but is a pretty
complete collection of those present. The DVD and CD are
available for sale on our
Merchandise page and are $10
each or $15 for both. Be sure to get your copies today.
